Court of Honor on May 20, 2019

Scouts!

Our next Court of Honor is Monday May 20th at 7:30 PM in the Parish Hall at the Holy Family Catholic Church.

Any scout who thinks he may be able to complete a rank-advancement in the next two weeks needs to email me with their plan to accomplish the requirements, and let's see if we can get a Scoutmaster Conference and a Board of Review scheduled.

Please remember that on May 20th, the boys should arrive by 7:00 PM to setup the Parish Hall tables and chairs.

Food for the Court of Honor will be as follows:
Scouts with Last names (A-L) will be bringing a food or snack item to be shared after the event. Scouts with Last names (M-Z) will please bring drinks to share (canned drinks work best). The SPL is in charge of getting the plates and napkins from the shed.

Merit Badge University April 27, 2019

Hi Foothills Scoutmasters & Committee Chairs!

This is Carol DelGais, Committee Member at Troop 1134 in Roswell, GA. 

Attached is a flyer for Troop 1134's 10th annual Merit Badge University Saturday, April 27.  Lots of Eagle-required classes and Red Cross CPR are offered. 

Many scouts from the Foothills District have attended this merit badge university for years and this time its location will be just up the road a little bit from Roswell at Arnold Mill ES in Woodstock. 

This year will be the 10th anniversary of holding this merit badge university to provide service to scouts all over Georgia and other nearby states.  We are very honored to offer classes to young scouts that provide skills for the outdoors, for life, and for leadership!

I have sent the attached flyer to District Execs, but with just coming back from spring break and Roundtables so close to the event, I thought I would send this to you directly since the date is fast-approaching.  You can also just find it on the meritbadge.info website.

Please feel free to share this with your troop and other scouting friends as certain classes always go fast.  Thanks and we'll see some of you there as usual!

Service Projects for February 2019

Several parents and scouts have been asking for opportunities to perform service hours, and here are two:

Event #1 - Foothills District Banquet

Who:  Scouts old and large enough to carry trays of food and able to behave well and follow directions for a period of two hours.
When: Event is Friday evening Feb 1, from 7-9PM in the Parish Hall at Holy Family.  Scout volunteers are needed from 6-9:30, but if you or your scout are not able to be there for that whole time, please still come out and do what you can.
What is it: An annual event, kind of like the Blue and Gold Banquets many of you will recall from Cub Scouts.  Instead of a pack, the guests are some of the adult leaders of the 76 Packs, Troops, and Crews in the Foothills District (East Cobb, North Cobb, and Marietta City).  It was held in the same room two years ago. You we will be joining a group of other volunteers in serving dinner to 200 guests.
Uniform:  Class A or clean Class B shirt if you're concerned about getting your Class A dirty.
Food: Scouts will be fed dinner
Registration: Sign up through TroopMaster

Event #2 - Pack 744 Pinewood Derby

When: Saturday, Feb 2, from 9AM - 3PM
Where: East Side Elementary Cafeteria
What: Work in the "Pits" and shuttle cars from finish to start in this model car race day.
Uniform: Class A
Food: Food and Drink available for purchase from the Pack
No registration required - Just show up and check in with Mr. Thornton or any of the Cub Leaders present.

Orienteering Class February 10, 2019

On Sunday, February 10 Troop 433 will be conducting a basic orienteering skills course.   Attending boys will be given the opportunity to achieve Second Class requirements 3a and 3d; First Class Requirements 4a and 4b and several basic requirements of the Orienteering merit badge. 

 

Where:  McFarland Nature Park.

When:  Sunday, February 10th  1:00pm to 3:30pm

Uniform: Class-B with hiking/walking shoes.

Mandatory equipment:  Compass, walking stick, pen or pencil.

Recommended equipment:  GPS or Smartphone with mapping app (“GAIA GPS” recommended).

To maximize fun-time at the park each boy needs to review a few things before we meet:   

 

  1. Be generally familiar with the attachment covering map symbols.  You will be tested.

                ** Pay special attention to the part on declination.  If you can do it, pre-set your compass with a -5 degree (west) declination.
