Cumberland Caverns Caving 2015

posted Mar 10, 2015, 5:36 AM by Scott Lovell   [ updated Apr 1, 2015, 5:41 PM ]

Here's some more helpful info regarding the trip:

Everyone needs to eat a snack before the tour. I suggest you bring some snack items like trail-mix to eat before caving. They don't want you to have a full stomach because you might get sick, but they don't want you to be hungry. The snack bar will be open after the caving tour. Prices for the snack bar are attached here.

Please read the list of do's and don'ts attached here.

Don't forget to bring a signed permission slip, attached here.

Some key items to bring - note, extra clothing needed!
• 2-3 sets of clothing:
- One set for the Adventure trip, including extra shoes (you will get muddy)
- One set to sleep in
- One set for the following morning
- Garbage bag for muddy clothes and shoes
• Ground barrier for you sleeping area. For example: Tarps, plastic bags, blankets, etc.
• Bedding: Sleeping pads, cots, or small air mattresses.
• Personal Toiletries
• Flashlight
• Gloves, elbow and knee pads

Thanks,
Laura Mills

Scouts,
We are making some changes to the Cumberland Caving Trip this coming weekend! I think you will like the changes. So throw away everything you heard and lets do this!

We made the arrangements for an evening tour and then camping in the cave on Saturday (3/14/2015). So the plan will change to this:

No Food Shopping on Thursday. We will buy dinner at restaurant on the way up on Saturday.
We depart on Saturday (3/14/2015) morning at 10AM (NOT Friday).
We return on Sunday (3/15/2015) around noon.

We will drive up on Saturday (leaving the church at 10AM) and stop and get a meal on the way. Then there is a snack-bar at the entrance to the cave where we can get a light snack before caving. Then on Sunday, there will be a free breakfast provided by Cumberland Caverns.

So, all you need is gear to sleep in the cave for one night and money for a meal on the way up.

Don't forget your permission form (below).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scouts,
The waiver for Cumberland Caverns is attached and MUST be filled and signed by the parents before the Cave will let the boys in,  Don't let the parents drop the boys off Friday without a completed and signed waiver form.
Note that on this trip we are BOTH dump camping AND cave camping, so those going on the trip will need to pack for both types of trips.  We will be able to pack our "dump camping" items back into the vehicles before going in for the cave camping portion.
-Hilary Thornton
What do I need to Bring?
• A backpack or duffel bag packed with all of your gear.
*Helpful Hint: You will carry your gear ½ mile from the parking area to the cave, so pack light.
• A sturdy flashlight with extra batteries.
• A small pack to carry a water bottle and extra batteries.
• Change of clothes, socks, shoes, and a jacket.
• Helpful Hint: If you are staying overnight, bring warmer clothes to sleep in
• Plastic bag for dirty clothes. You will get wet and muddy!
• Sleeping bag, pad, ground cloth (tarp, plastic) if spending the night.
*Helpful Hint: We do have electricity in the cave, so if you want to bring an air mattress & pump for “roughing-it” that will work just fine.
What do I need to wear?
• Jeans or pants are best (Remember, you will be getting dirty, so not your best pair)
• Shorts should not be worn because you will be crawling on your hands and knees.
• Hiking boots are best, good lace-up sneakers will also work (Bubblegum Alley is a great place to lose shoes!)
• Layer a long sleeve shirt with a T-shirt (or just a t-shirt is fine for spelunking at Cumberland Caverns)
• Helmet, if you don’t have one, we’ll loan you one for free (you will grow to love your helmet during spelunking)
Can you accommodate my special needs during the overnight?
We will do our best to help you and your group have a fun and safe experience while spelunking at Cumberland Caverns. If you have special needs, please call us (931-668-4396) and let us find a way to help you.
Some of the mostfrequent needs addressed are:
• Sleep Apnea: we do have electrical outlets at the campsite.
• Medicines: If there are medicines that need to be stored or taken during the Adventure Trip, please ask your group leader inform us at check-in.
• Dietary Restrictions: If you have specific dietary needs during your stay, please let us know. You may bring specific food items on your trip, or it may be something that we regularly stock.
Are there things we cannot bring?
Yes, to protect the cave and abide by the laws of the state of Tennessee, a few items are not allowed in the cave. The following is a list of items that are not allowed during Cumberland Caverns Adventure Trips.
• Chewing gum
• Alcohol or drugs
• Food or drinks
• Helpful Hint: If you medically must have certain foods, please call our office for details.
• Pets, radios, video games, laser pointers, or musical instruments
• Weapons or fireworks
• Cigarettes, cigars or chewing tobacco. Cumberland Caverns is a tobacco free environment
Dominoes Fundraiser 2015
posted Feb 3, 2015, 11:58 AM by Scott Lovell   [ updated Apr 1, 2015, 5:42 PM ]
Hi Everyone!
We kicked off our Domino’s Pizza Card Fundraiser at the meeting last night with an enthusiastic visit from Nikki Kametz.  She did a great job to get our boys fired up to sell these “easy to sell” cards.
Attached are the order forms and directions in case you were not able to attend last night.  Each Scout receives a free card after selling just 12 offers.  In addition, if each Scout sells 12 cards, Nikki will sponsor our Troop with a  tee-shirt designed by the boys!  Please encourage your Scout to sell to family, friends, neighbors, teachers, people you know at civic/religious organizations, parent’s co-workers, etc.  The card is buy one get one free on any number of Domino’s pizzas through the end of 2015.  Cards are valid at Domino’s locations in most counties in GA and in some counties in surrounding states.
This year we must complete an order form and obtain $10 per card in cash or check (made out to Troop 433) at the time of sale.  We will collect the order forms and money on Monday, February 16th to send in the final order.
Again, Domino’s cards are an easy sell and 50% of the sale goes directly to the Scout account.  Money can be used for Summer Camp, camping equipment and other Scout outings.
Please encourage your son to participate and, if you can, please sell to your co-workers.
Thanks again,
Cynthia
